I already use javascript when building websites, but felt that I didn't really understand how to get the most out of it. Like many designers/developers, I only really use a standard set of codes to add a basic level of functionality to a site. I wanted to go beyond the basics and to develop some decent applications.

Well this book sure helped me to achieve that. I thought that I had a good grasp of the concepts involved but gained a much more thorough understanding of scripting by the time that I finished this book. It really is an excellent beginners' book that takes you up to intermediate standard. I have already begun work on a couple of javascript projects and am making excellent progress thanks to the solid foundations laid by working through this book.

If you want a good grasp of the concepts involved in using javascript then buy this book and do all of the exercises in it and you will be well on your way.

I've had this book for ages and its been my life line when I've forgotten tags and such. I had a little bit of JS knowledge before I picked this book up but I could never get my head around the for and while loops, this book explained the concept excellently!

The way its laid out is great for beginners as it takes you by the hand and leads you through different parts of the JS world. The CASE section with the story is pretty amusing and gets the point across well. Oh yeah, if you pick up this book, be prepared to laugh and come with a sense of humor, this isn't a dry old tome of a book, its a great laugh while you learn!

A good book for someone just starting out with Javascript. A bit 'comicy' but it does take you step by step through the principal features of Javascript. A good book for anyone totally new to the subject.

I didn't find this as accessible as other Head First titles in terms of communicating syntax. That said, some great introductions to/explanations of concepts which I haven't found explained better elsewhere.

I had much more joy drawing on the advice Andrew Burgess and jumping straight into the (free) JavaScript tutorials offered by Code Academy.

This may be a reflection of my learning style though, I think there's a good chance that I'll get more mileage out of this book once I've mastered the basics.

If are just beginning with JavaScript, I would advise you to not buy this book. Although it covers most of the basic topics, it is very difficult to understand. The examples are very convoluted and hard to understand. I would rather recomend DOM Scripting as a first book, or JavaScript for Beginners.

As an older starter in web programming technology I found this book extremely useful and easy to understand, like other head first books that I have had.
It plain simple language and I like the fact that they are giving you tasks to do to aid in the learning process.

In my opinion Top Dollar

This book is not designed for programmers wanting to learn a new language, but for first timers learning their first. Code samples are few and far between and there is little info on library functions.

That said, the info that is there seems to be correct and it does cover a broad range.

The only downside to this, is that the book is in black and white, not coloured. But otherwise, brilliant book for beginners.

Thanks for your reviews of this book!

The reason I say this is because after realising thast I as a designer providing flash/graphics for many years..needed to get with the program (no pun intended.) and learn the dark arts of programming languages to really get my career moving again - and these reviews have really helped.

Im just starting to read:

Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS 2nd Edition'by Ian Lloyd;

..then I plan to buy this book to get me going on Javascript.

Wish me luck.
