5.0 out of 5 stars A truly astounding read!, 10 July 2006

Whenever a new phenomenon in literature evolves, I have always been a bit sceptic. When Harry Potter began to take the world by storm, I personally couldn't believe that a childrens book not written by Roald Dahl could be so impressive, but I was completely wrong, and am now a huge fan. The same happened when The Da Vinci Code, began to make headlines as being a multi-million selling book. Having not read it, I believed that it was just another book. However, having only this morning completed reading the Rabert Langdon omnibus, I am astounded. The imaginitive and precise style in which the novel is written makes the novel appear remarkably realistic. The research that has gone into the book is equally breath-taking. To sum up, there is a reason that Dan Brown has sold over 40 million copies of The Da Vinci Code alone, and it is simply that the novel is beyond amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, 10 Dec 2010

This review is from: Robert Langdon Omnibus: "Angels and Demons", "The Da Vinci Code" (Hardcover)
This is a hardback omnibus edition.

Dan Brown has taken a lot of knocks over the Da Vinci Code. First by the Catholic Church who hate to have their unpalatable history raked over. Second by snobbish literary critics trying to argue that the Da Vinci Code isn't 'War and Peace'. In fact Brown's writing style and storytelling are much better than the critics would have you believe (critics who doubtless could not themselves have written anything as good or they would have done so!) Brown cleverly entwines solid research, plausible fiction and an ever-popular 'innocent man pursued' plot to make a cracking story - check those sales figures. His exposure of the historic discrimination against women by the Catholic Church is interesting in view of their current refusal to accept women into the priesthood - preferring, it appears, to accept men with dubious leanings. The 'Last Supper' element is particularly plausible and adds a depth of realism. I Googled it in 'Images' to confirm Brown's fact's! However, the notion that if Jesus had children there could be a single 'royal line' is a bit weak since as anyone who does ancestry knows that lines branch and Jesus would be more likely to have thousands of descendants. Nevertheless I loved it as a clever and readable fast paced thriller. The characters are quite well developed and pleasantly unusual in that Robert Langdon doesn't jump into bed with Sophie even though he is clearly very fond of her and she him! Lots of clever puzzles and twists and turns on the way through. A very good read.

Some people think Angels and Demons is better than the Da Vinci Code. Again it's a clever plot with another twisty ending and has even more pace. But I found it less satisfying and a bit too gory. The helicopter ending is a bit thin too. Still a good read, though. Brown's other books have the same style (why change a winning formula?) The latest, the Lost Symbol, I thought got off the a good start but then became tedious. Might try it again in case it was the mood I was in!

Great product. I bought this as a gift to a Dan Brown fan and having both of these stories in a beautiful hard back is a really good buy.

I'm not a huge reader. I picked up these books as a challenge to read a 1000 page book. I couldn't put it down and have ordered all of Dan Brown's other books.
