The adventures of Fred as he takes off in an elderly camper van to go around Ireland with his two cats Cheesy and Pugwash, are lively and ridiculous. The cats wage warfare on all local life forms, from mice to soldiers, and only a belligerent goat gets the better of them. Fred loses bits of the van along the way and meets interesting people at campsites, while searching for Irish roots.
Returning home to London in the early 1990s, Fred finds a stolen car being set alight outside his flat by bank raiders. Watching the firemen battle the flames, his neighbours commiserate with him on having spent a warm summer touring Ireland, saying that it must have been like a war zone. The cats of course, are enjoying the heat.
Great fun and while Ireland has moved on, this is a good picture of a time now in its past. The author has also written plays and been a newspaper correspondent.
