This seems dated now because of its political relevance to the miner's strikes of the 1980's - but it is still a first rate thriller. Fast paced and dour, it can seem almost despairing at times. Hill keeps the tension humming along until the last page. A cruel but brilliant book.

5.0 out of 5 stars read it, 12 Jan 2004

i really liked this one. I think it is one of his shortest which meant that it kept me interested throughout and didn't drag along in places as with some of his other, longer books. The plot is pretty interesting and the characters are created perfectly so you really care about them and can relate to them. i would definately recommend this.

As a chance newcomer to Mr. Hill and his most lifelike and vibrant characters, I was enthralled by this book, and shall certainly be ordering the rest forthwith. Good story, well spun, chillingly realistic representation of the characters, plot and atmosphere. I didn't find it dated in the least. The place may change, but the theme is timeless. Definitely recommended!

Brilliant. an excellently rich, multilayered whodunnit, with interesting characters and intriguing plot. It's nice to see more of Ellie as well. She is a very interesting character, and although you shouldn't you are just willing her to take her relationship with colin Farr even further. Mainly because Hill has made him such a likeable character and you would like for Ellie to see some action. This is withought doubt one of the best books Hill has churned out 4 some time. And even tho the background of the mining industry will forever set it back in time, that doesn't seem to matter. A thoroughly brilliant book Mr Hill. Well done.
