4.0 out of 5 stars Basie on tour!, 1 April 2014
This review is from: Good Morning Blues: The Autobiography of Count Basie (Paladin Books) (Paperback)
Let me say what the book isn't, then what it is:

This book isn't much of an insight into the Count's personal feelings or life as he offers very little of himself. For example, his courtship and marriage to Catherine Morgan in the 1930s attracts barely a paragraph and their life together not much more than 2 pages in almost 500 (not much considering they were together until his death in 1984!). He makes it clear at various points that he won't be dishing any dirt or offering gossip on friends or the Jazz scene. His language is also clipped, calling drinking sessions 'going out for a nip'.

What this book is about is the band and the music. In fact, after a few preliminaries about his early life and how he got into music, this is simply the outline of a 60 year tour schedule! It's the venues, the hotels, the crowds, and the line ups (a lot about the band line ups). There are a lot of stories, but they are never far from the bandstand. Good Morning Blues tells you something about what it was like to be a Jazz musician in the early days. Things like it was so competitive that you usually found out that you were out of a band when you arrived at a gig and found the band had started half-an-hour early with somebody else in your seat!

This book is definitely worth a read, but Count Basie is a gentleman and won't satisfy anyone's desire for gossip. If you are interested in the music and how the big band scene operated, then this is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting for fans of the Big Bands, 22 Aug 2009

(REAL NAME)
Basie combined with Albert Murray when obviously his memory was failing and there is a lot of "I seem to remember" or "I think ...". Still it is a good glimpse into what drove The Count and his ambitions. Thank Heavens a lot of his music lives on today on CDs.
