I got this book as it covers all the poetry I needed for my AS level, it is very concise and useful for annotating poems etc.. It isn't like modern York notes so its a bit wordy at times but I looked around for many notes books on Tennyson and this was by far the best one I could find.

Some excellent analysis of Tennyson's most prominent works, though for such an extensive poem, I would've expected more than 4 pages on 'In Memoriam A.H.H.'. Brief in parts, but explores a lot in terms of the overarching themes of Tennyson's poetry.

NOTE: The rest of this review will look at York Notes in general.

I've used York Notes for several years, mostly during GCSE/AS/A Levels as an aid with coursework. On the whole, they offer some useful linguistic and contextual information, enabling me to develop my argument with relevant analysis. A few times I have read a passage on something I'm studying and thought "I didn't notice that" and then added it into my essay - that's largely what York Notes are useful for.
The newer editions seem a little more rudimentary, (older York Notes have a much better written commentary section) and simplistic, most of what it is written is fairly obvious after reading the poem/novel itself, though there are invariably a handful of detailed, thorough points that would 'boost your grade' if that's what your aim is.
As I say, these books are designed for students and possibly as an introduction to a topic, and are not designed to be read as developed, critical essays.
If you need some relevant analysis to get started on a literary figure, or are looking to supplement your knowledge, you can't do better than York Notes.

Although quite detailed for an old mind like mine, I found this to be REALLY helpful on a subject I knew very little about.

This guide is a good companion to doing Tennyson poetry at any level, yet I used it at GCSE. Helpful poem analysis is useful, and in general a good book for anyone studying his poetry.
It obviously does something right, I got an A* in the exam!!

Good book, only trouble was it covered only 8 or so of the 22 Tennyson poems on the AQA lit syllabus:(

If your using the purple Tennyson poetry book this York Notes doesn't cover the full range as well as this the analysis didn't prove to be to helpful as I had my own analysis of his poems already and this book didn't really add much to that. I'd go as far as to call the book slightly limited.

No point buying it unless you need help getting started, if you've got your own analysis and your looking for abit more it doesn't really help.

BTW I got a B at AS so judge for yourselves
