4.0 out of 5 stars Good but hard going
This book is extremely informative and you don't need to have a hefty background knowledge of linguistic terminology. However, it can be quite involved in parts and some concepts are difficult to grasp hold of. At some points the author goes into quite unnecessary detail over concepts that could actually be explained rather easily.

1.0 out of 5 stars Would be better with some animation
I know it's bad to judge a book by it's cover, but I mean... look at the cover. It tells you all you need to know, which is to put the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, 15 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read other books by Fairclough and found them difficult, mainly due to my lack of knowledge about linguists and their use of specialized vocabulary. This one, however, is a good starting point and I wish I had read it first. It is much more accessible to beginners and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in this fascinating area of social study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely interesting, 16 Nov 2000
I didn't think analysing language was my thing. However this book changed my mind, it makes analysing conversations easy, interesting and do-able, if you are a social science student - read it, if you are doing your gcse or a levels - read it, if you want an interesting read - well you've got the picture by now.
