D. G. Wright draws to our attention the background behind the French Revolution with clarity.
Drawing attention to social conditions in pre-revolutionary France.
Though aimed at history students the book is a good easy read for the general reader and brings to the fore themes not obviouse from normal awareness of the subject.
Though not being a huge book it covers the topics with ease and a good list of further books on this subject to read in the future with a hope of a further understanding.

If you're doing a course on this (e.g. A Level and above) I'd recommend this above various other syntheses: it's short, sharp, well written, and has enough detail to be really useful but not too much to drown you, guiding you nicely through the big questions. Personally, I'm familiar with the more recent Seminar Studies title, Doyle's big book, and one or two of the current textbooks, but I keep coming back to this.
