This review is from: The Voices of Time (Paperback)
'The Voices of Time', along with 'The Terminal Beach' collects the early SF new-wave of JG Ballard. Moving from his disowned debut ('The Wind from Nowhere'?) to the geophysical shifts of 'The Drowned World', 'The Drought' & 'The Crystal World'...This collection was originally published as 'The Four-Dimensional Nightmare'- with the stories 'Prima Belledonna' and 'Studio 5, The Stars'- here replaced by 'The Overloaded Man' and 'Thirteen to Centaurus'. The title story seems to be a tryout for novels like 'High Rise'- the highlights are 'The Overloaded Man' (a common theme explored), 'Chronopolis' (one of his most SF works, along with 'Billennium') and the best, 'The Gardens of Time'. A blend of the imagery of 'The Crystal World' with a fracture of time in the mode of 'Last Year at Marienbad'. Along with 'The Terminal Beach', this collection set Ballard on his journey towards 'inner space' (see the SF-essays in 'A User's Guide to The Millennium'). This is a great collection- but I would reccomend- for a few more $$$$'s & ££££££'s 'The Collected Short Stories'- which takes in all of Ballard's short-stories (including those dropped from 'The Four-Dimensional Nightmare'). 'The Voices of Time' remains a highpoint and is a great collection of short-stories.
