Solid story & central characters but a bit drawn out..
on 19 May 2011
I've been "away from fantasy" for a while, and had read lots of reviews trying to find what to read on my return. I decided to buy the trilogy of Mistborn books all in one go on the strength of several reviews suggesting these books are action packed, fast paced, hard to put down etc.
I am about 2/3rds of the way through the Final Empire but I've got mixed opinions on it so far. On the one hand, I do like the premise of the book, the different twist on magic that is Allomancy and the central characters. However, I am actually finding it quite slow going overall, which perhaps isn't really surprising given the size of the book!
In between the action and events that drive the story along there are, in my opinion, overly long sections of small-talk between characters, too much detail on the magic and training Vin goes through and too many non-central characters thrown into the equation, none of which are particularly interesting apart from Sazed.
I'll certainly finish the book, but if I hadn't already bought the other two books I probably wouldn't be rushing to read the next one.
