Edna O'Brien writes like an angel. Not a word is wasted, not a heartstring left untugged. This book is one that I shall read and re-read, and I am sure that each time I will get more out of each superbly-crafted story. As both a novelist and short-story writer she is unsurpassed. Excellent, and heartily recommended to anyone who appreciates sheer quality.

I have been an avid reader of Edna o'Brien Novels and short stories for over twenty years, her latest collection is outstanding you can smell the turf and porter as you turn over the pages. Her insight into the human heart in all it's forms is the work of a literary genius. I urge everyone with the tiniest strand of compassion to read this book, your heart is made of stone if you fail to be moved.A masterpiece

Wonderfully perceptive and descriptive atmospheres
of people and places interacting in a series of almost
Joycean vignettes about real life London and rural Ireland.
She's a sure fire winner/ author each time she puts
her hard won and hard wrought thoughts down on the page!

This is a collection of excellently written short stories from a great author. They are not action packed and there are no car chases, but the writing is good quality and interesting. It is an excellent book to dip in and out of if you have only short bursts of time to spend relaxing with a good book - the short journey to work or even a trip to the bathhroom - come all; we all read on the toilet! I bought the book after listening ton interview with Edna O'Brien on the radio and have loved it. I can fully recommend it to anyone that likes good literature and relaxing.

I was frankly disappointed in this collection but that is a chance you take with writers. I think that it fell below the writer's usual high standards. Nevertheless, I was pleased to read it but I did not actually take much from it. I wonder if the writer was aware of the falling off of her powers. Hopefully her "muse" will return and she can further delight us.

Half way through this book. Very enjoyable so far. This girl solo writes about all of our loves and lives. The emotions raw. Great read for the girls!

I have read a number of recent books by Edna O'Brien and I didn't think that this is one of her best. Maybe she is getting tired but the stories were not that original and the characters were a bit too easy. Instead of buying this book, I would suggest going for another, better recent book by the same author.

This book was so good that I had to read one story after another. All were different but with the usual Irish twists and genuine people.
