This review is from: Thom Gunn (Poet to Poet) (Paperback)
As I read Thom Gunn for part of my degree as opposed to through choice because I like the style or content of his poetry, I can't say I enjoyed or appreciated his poetry.

A lot of his poetry focuses on his homosexuality, some of the poems do this directly and vividly, others appear to be on seemingly innocent topics yet on closer inspection are filled with sensual and sexual imagery and words so that the entire book feels sexualised. I found this very tiresome to read - rather like being with someone who is determined to twist everything you say into something sexual.

Not a pleasant read, in my opinion, but even I had to admire his use of language and skill in the technical crafting of his poetry. I imagine that anyone who is a fan of contemporary poetry and is both liberally-minded and fascinated by the almost creepy sexual-morbidness that infuses Thom Gunn's poetry would really enjoy this.
