5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Greece - A Short History
A comprehensive, fascinating account of Greece for anyone wanting to know about life, history and politics beyond "Ancient" Greece - from the foundation of Constantinople in AD 324 to Papandreou's defeat in 1989. Highly readable and informative.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dull but thorough history of 'modern' Greece
Andrew Marr's "A History of Modern Britain" kicked off in 1940. This history of "Modern Greece" by C.M. Woodhouse takes 8 chapters to reach that year. 'Modern' in the case of Greece seems to be defined as any period of history that isn't 'Ancient' and so we begin with the founding of Byzantium in the 4th Century, a time when the Romans were still in Britain...

Andrew Marr's "A History of Modern Britain" kicked off in 1940. This history of "Modern Greece" by C.M. Woodhouse takes 8 chapters to reach that year. 'Modern' in the case of Greece seems to be defined as any period of history that isn't 'Ancient' and so we begin with the founding of Byzantium in the 4th Century, a time when the Romans were still in Britain.

The book is subtitled "A Short History". It's not that short (350+ pages of quite small text) but given the time frame under consideration there isn't a great deal of space in which to look at the current ('modern') Greek state in any detail. This was annoying for me as i bought the book to get a better understanding of contemporary Greece but it's also potentially misleading because, as the author himself admits, the relationship between Greece as it exists today and earlier 'Greek' states is by no means straightforward. 'Greece' is as much an idea as a place, as much a product of the spread of nationalist ideas to the Balkans as it is a source of such ideas.

The best thing about the book is that it's thorough - or at any rate it feels thorough. A lot of information about the intricacies of Greek politics is packed into its pages. The writing style is a bit dull though. Despite coups, revolutions and wars there is no sense of tension - just a long, solid plod.

4.0 out of 5 stars great book for people interested in the history of greece, 20 Nov 2001
This review is from: Modern Greece: A Short History (Paperback)
This book at first sight seems to be a bit boring and detailed but I am absolutely delighted with content as it covers a wide range of incidents greek people had been through. I can also assure you the objectivity of this book as I didnt find anything offensive and conflicting with me being Turkish. Finally, you will definately learn a lot and enjoy the history of greece.
