5.0 out of 5 stars 3 of emma tennant's best novels in 1 volume -- a must-have!, 13 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Travesties: "Bad Sister", "Two Women of London", "Faustine" (Paperback)
if you buy this book you get 3 of emma tennant's best novels in one single volume! it contains 'the bad sister', 'two women of london' and 'faustine'. 'bad sister' is based on j. hogg's novel 'the private confessions and memoires of a justified sinner', 'two women of london' on r.l.stevenson's 'dr jekyll and mr hyde' and 'faustine' refers to goethe's 'faust'.
my personal favourite is 'two women of london': tennant takes stevenson's plot and puts it into the london of the 1980s. she also turns his characters, who are all male, into female characters.
this novel is one of the best social studies of the 1980s that i have ever read. tennant criticizes the political movement at that time (thatcherism), extreme feminism and the social gap. she shows women's problems and how they were/are caused! however, she is certainly not a (radical) feminist - in fact she shows that radical feminism does women more harm than good...so all you men out there, there is no reason for you not to read this brilliant novel...and ladies, it is a MUST for all of you!!!
