4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive 'bible' of the knotting world
This two inch thick hard backed book contains (almost) every knot you could ever imagine or want to tie.
It covers knots, bends, hitches, splices, whippings, decorative knots, sinnets, tackle and more. Background information and many usage hints are given throughout. Ashley's knowledge of his subject and obvious enthusiasm for all things connected with knots...

2.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but difficult to follow instructions
The poor quality and clarity of instructions on emulating the comprehensive list of knots results in little value to the novice. This is more suited to a knot proffessional. Many of the drawings were hand drawn and difficult to examine without magnification. Some knots had no instructions at all. I was disapointed in the price I paid for a definitive guide to knots.

4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive 'bible' of the knotting world, 13 Jun 1999

This review is from: The Ashley Book of Knots (Hardcover)
This two inch thick hard backed book contains (almost) every knot you could ever imagine or want to tie.
It covers knots, bends, hitches, splices, whippings, decorative knots, sinnets, tackle and more. Background information and many usage hints are given throughout. Ashley's knowledge of his subject and obvious enthusiasm for all things connected with knots and their usage is clear from the detail incorporated in this book.
It is an expert's reference guide, not a 'how to' manual for novices. The small, hand drawn sketchs and sometimes scant instructions are not suitable for the beginner, but the shear quantity of information (in words and pictures) make this the definitive reference guide even though more than 50 years have passed since its inital publication.
Having been published in 1944 it does not cover knots suitable for synthetic ropes such as used by the moderen rock climber.
You can not claim to have a serious interest in knots and ropework if you do not have a copy of 'Ashley' on your book shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE book of knots!, 23 Oct 2003

Anyone with a serious knot interest needs a copy of "Ashley" sooner or later. The numbers the knots you have in the Ashley (ususally written e g "A#123") serves knotters all over the world as a mututal reference, like species names in Latin serves biologists! The older issues lacks knots for moderns synthetics and webbing, but this is still THE book of knots!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the Bible of Knots, 6 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Ashley Book of Knots (Hardcover)
This book originally came to my attention as a non-borrowable on site viewing only at my local library. Having had the opportunity to thoroughly review this book when I saw it advertised in hard cover for roughly £30 plus postage naturally I bought it. As usual the speed of dispatch was excellent. As for the book I've given it four out of five only because the instructions on the more complex examples I find to be inadequate. Otherwise this book is almost the Bible of knotts.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book of knots, 1 Sep 2006

Anyone serious about knots, as well as their historical origins, cannot really do without this book. As well as providing the comprehensive guide to (almost) all possible knots, there are also a lot of descriptive asides, for example: what kind of Knot was used for a R.N. Sailor's queue? a 4-ply sinnet?

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost comprehensive, 17 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ashley Book of Knots (Hardcover)
Of course this is the classic book of knots and was in its time probably as comprehensive as any book could be, it still is the most comprehensive and in fact it contains more knots than any sane person would ever want to know.
However it is now in need of updating and there are some important omissions especially modern climbing knots such as the munter mule and the slip hitch to a karabiner.

I bought this book as a present for a friend, who is passionate of knots. I didn't study too many knots on this book because I offered it soon after purchase, but from what I saw I was very pleased. Also I received the same answer from him when I asked if he enjoyed the present. The book was in good state when I received it. But the paper is not the pure-white type, it is a little bit greyed (like the ecological paper). But this is minor and was not an issue for me.

One thing to mention: the book is not suited to a novice, but more to a knot proffessional, I find it advanced and complex. Many of the drawings were hand drawn and difficult to understand. Some knots had few instructions. If you don't know what it is about, sometimes you may find difficult to tie the knot. So, if you are looking for a book to learn knots, this is not the one to start with.

But, if you are a passionate collector, then this definitely should be in your library because it is the most comprehensive collection of knots and an amazing piece of art. One who is willing to study and to improve his knowledge should have this book because he/she will find it entertaining. And I recommend it because I am one of the "collector" type. The work of the author is huge, and all the drawings are hand made, thousands of them, and I really appreciate the work of the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Book Of Knots, 3 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Ashley Book of Knots (Hardcover)
I didn't remember the name of this book until I bought another knot book and was prompted to view The Ashley Book of Knots. It was the "look inside" feature that reminded me of when I first saw this book. I was in the Sea Scouts and I was amazed by the diversity and number of knots it contained. The book was owned by one of the adult helpers who guarded it jealously. I haven't seen one since 1976 and after all these years it still held the same excitement. It is a book that is well written and very easy to read. Even if you don't like working ropes it explains the history of knotting and stories of their successes and failures. The book is said to be the bible of knots, I can only say that I am proud to now own it and will have years of fun working my way through it. There really is something in here for everyone, young and old. From tying shoelaces to decorative plaiting, useful or pretty, this book will lead you through it. Don't expect colour or photographs, just clear easy to follow drawings and a story for most of the 3500 plus knots. Enjoy!
