Having watched the TV series years ago and also having bought the DVD of the first series, I just love the story lines. So knowing I was going into hospital for a week + I bought all 5 of the books and totally enjoyed reading them, don't normally get the time to read. I do wish the BBC would release the other series on DVD so my children can enjoy them too.

For a stressed city exec dreaming of retreating to the countryside for an idyllic existence this is a great escapist novel. The writing is witty and oh so slightly moralistic, but in the way your granny was when you were a child on her knee. It manages to be 'old England' beautiful without preaching and gives a great insight into how rural life isn't all sunsets and scenery, although those are the highlights. Funny in places, sad in others, but always a complusive read although the action isn't fast. Brilliant to read on the tube to take you right out of your hectic city existence.
