It's hard to imagine anyone (other than Joyce herself of course), doing a more accurate impression of Joyce Grenfell than Maureen Lipman. Not what I'd expected, really. I anticipated some of her pithy monologues, but much of this is from her later period on radio variety shows, doing that tiresome British soprano+baritone duet stuff. Interesting for a one-off listen, but I think this will be charity shop bound sometime soon

This review is from: My Kind of Magic (BBC Radio Collection) (Audio CD)
It's hard to imagine anyone (other than Joyce herself of course), doing a more accurate impression of Joyce Grenfell than Maureen Lipman. And Maureen's affection for Joyce glows through the whole reading. There seems to be a bit of everything in this collection of snippets - I think there was even a reference to the kitchen sink at one point and there was certainly mention of Joyce's liking for hot water. There are cherished childhood memories, happy memories of her marriage, recipes, likes (along the "whiskers on kittens and raindrops on roses" lines) and dislikes, impressions of other people's foibles and speech mannerisms, poetry (mainly the doggerel variety), philosophy and religion and a lot more.

There are 2 CDs in the case and although it says on the CD case that the running time is 1 hour and 30 minutes, it is in fact 2 hours and 21 minutes (disk 1 is 1 hour and 6 minutes, disk 2 is 1 hour and 15 minutes). But who's counting? It's a pleasure to listen to and it seems like a bonus to get almost an extra hour over what's promised on the box. Recommended.
