5.0 out of 5 stars Great Dr Who Stuff!
For me, Tom Baker was the best Dr Who and my mum actually bought me the original audiotape of this story in 1976. Over time I lost this cassette but I have just received this re-release and it is still has good as I remember. If you like Dr Who then you won't be disappointed, a top quality production for a top quality story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doctor Who and the Pescatons - By the pricking of my thumbs, something fishy this way comes...
Back in the mid seventies, the TV version of Dr. Who was at its height, with Tom Baker in the lead and Elisabeth Sladen as his assistant, Sarah Jane. Someone then had the bright idea of trying to record an audio only adventure for release on vinyl LP (remember those?) in an early attempt at a multi platform release. This interesting little entry was the result.

The story is narrated by Tom Baker, with the odd line by Elisabeth Sladen and Bill Mitchell as the main villain. It sounds a bit like an audio book rather than an audio drama, but the small intimate atmosphere works quite well. The story is quite interesting, with some good ideas. The only trouble is that, due to the time limitations of an old vinyl LP, the run time is limited to about 45 minutes, meaning that everything feels a bit rushed, and nothing is really developed properly. Also, the main advantage of audio is that the sets and monsters should be a whole lot easier to realise on a limited budget, but the sound effects here are pretty poor, even by the standards of the day.

There is a bonus second disk containing an interesting interview with Elisabeth Sladen regarding her time on the show. The liner reproduces the original sleeve art, and contains a brief essay on the genesis of the recording. The recording has been nicely transferred and has a nice clear sound, in glorious stereo.

All in all, an interesting idea and worth a listen, but limited in scope. Three stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kris's Pescaton Review, 20 Mar 2009

This is a fascinating piece of Doctor who material. One of the only audio plays with Tom Baker in it, and it has an interview with Liz Sladen as long as the program itself. And the pescatons are one of the best monsters I've ever seen. The storyline isn't the most original but it still works well and for the rareness factor alone this one is a real Gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Dr Who Story, 23 Mar 2013

I originally bought the LP many years ago because the story was never aired on TV and it was exclusive to audio. I recently bought the CD version from Amazon and decided to listen to the story again. I was surprised how good the story still stands up after all this time and that it doesn't date! Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen are Dr Who legends. I wish that more exclusive to audio series had been produced. A very highly recommended purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pescatons, 16 Mar 2011

This is basically like one of those Companion Chronicles Big Finish cds, where a person reads the story, with the occasional extra voice or sound effect. Not very exciting, but good for fans or Whovians. The plot is alright, the sound effects are quite good for the time (except when they changed the Tardis noise), and the action is sorta' believable. Worth a try if you're into this kind of thing.
