This review is from: The "Navy Lark": Series 2 v. 2 (Radio Collection) (Audio CD)
Another excellent release of classic early `60's radio comedy from the BBC. This collection presents the last eleven extant episodes of series two of The Navy Lark, probably one of the most successful, long running and well loved radio series of all time. Telling the adventures of the crew of HMS Troutbridge - Fishing mad Commander Stanton, first officer Murray (permanently trying to keep the lid on the latest disaster), ladies man and lovable idiot sub lieutenant Philips (with Leslie Philips on fine `Cor - I say' form), scheming CPO Pertwee and put upon able seaman Johnson - and their commanding officer Commander `Thunderguts' Povey just looking for any chance to have the whole lot court martialled, this is a wonderful comedy that has really stood the test of time. As it has very few topical references it is just as funny today as when first broadcast. These early series had a humour based on clever plots and characterisations, and are my favourites. The later series of Navy Lark relied a bit too much on silly voices and slapstick, I much prefer the clever writing on offer here.

As with the `Round The Horne' and ongoing `Goon Show' releases, these have been restored to their best possible quality by Ted Kendall. But please bear in mind the source of the material, some of it comes from off air recordings, so even with the best of restoration it occasionally sounds a bit rough. I must say that the quality of this release is head and shoulders above the rest, in comparison the quality is superb.

The eleven episodes are presented on six discs, each in a separate card slipcase. The twelfth episode is present as a PDF of the script. There is also an extra in the form of an episode recorded at a special concert for the WRENs. The six discs and informative booklet are collected into a handsome and quality feeling card box, about the size of a double jewel case. It not only sounds good, it looks good on the shelf!

The Eleven episodes are:

Series 2 Episode 15 `A Crisp Romance'
Series 2 Episode 16 `The Lighthouse Lark'
Series 2 Episode 17 `Pertwee Posted To Portsmouth'
Series 2 Episode 18 `Johnson' Diet'
Series 2 Episode 19 `Tug-Of-War'
Series 2 Episode 21 `The Cross Country Run'
Series 2 Episode 22 `The Morning After'
Series 2 Episode 23 `The Admiral's Present'
Series 2 Episode 24 `Secret Mission To Calais'
Series 2 Episode 25 `Mr Murray Goes Sick'
Series 2 Episode 26 `The Portarneyland Fishing Limit'

Well done BBC, keep them coming! And any chance of a proper release for `I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again' while you are at it?
