Apart from being perhaps one of the most important political thinkers of the last 100 years, and one of the most important Labour politicians of all time, Tony Benn's diaries are particularly lucid and informative because they aren't revisionist history; unlike most politician's Benn didn't dictate this through hindsight.

Benn describes many of the trials of the Wilson/Callaghan government of 1975/1979 as well as his period of opposition during the 1980s and 90s. Of particular importance is his impressions of the Windscale Strike and how even as a senior Cabinet minister and Energy Minister he was still kept out of the loop for the true purpose of atomic energy, namely nuclear weapons. His diaries on the IMF Crisis, which ultimately destroyed Labour in the 70s and paved the way for Thatcher, are fascinating for those interested in that period.

His notes on the 1992 election is also very interesting - he realised early on that Labour probably weren't going to win and that early on and even Benn was wrong-footed by Mandelson and Blair; rumours at the time of Mandelson as Leader and Blair as deputy seemed highly unlikely to Benn and it is to his credit he includes this to show no politicians are sages.

Fascinating diaries by a unique politician, these diaries are extremely valuable both as a historical document and as an insight to a genuinely decent and honourable man.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Insight, 22 Sept. 2010

The tapes give a fascinating insight into Tony Benn's thoughts while in the Cabinet, and record many interesting events, including the start of the North Sea oil drilling. As usual, Tony Benn's ethical approach is in evidence. It's interesting to hear his personal views of some of the prominent politicians of the time!
Well worth listening to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting listening, 25 Nov. 2010
This review is from: The Benn Tapes 1 (Radio Collection) (Audio CD)
As a great admirer of Mr Benn, I thoroughly enjoyed these CDs. The way he presents arguments is very engaging. These tapes also give a history of the Labour party when Tony Benn was an MP. As one would imagine, this possibly is not a suitable gift for a conservative supporter.

an excellent view of politics from the inside over a large number of years in and out of government. Also the view of events over a long period and Tony Benns involvement

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating despite the sound effects, 25 Nov. 2012

This review is from: The Benn Tapes 1 (Radio Collection) (Audio CD)
The same review applies to The Benn Tapes 1 and 2 - these are fascinating reminders of the political changes and machinations of the latter decades of the twentieth century, seen through the eyes of an increasingly isolated and frustrated Tony Benn. The sense of the time that has passed since these episodes is amplified by the variable quality of the sound recordings and the production decision to drop in frequent 'recording-equipment-sound-effects'. The 'home-made' effect that this generates soon wears thin, and makes the subsequent diary recordings (1991-2001 and 2001-2007) much easier-listening in comparison.
