4.0 out of 5 stars merlin-1st of many ★
This was bought for my 10 year old grandaughter who had watched all 5 series of Merlin on dvd. Even after watching it she loved the book and would like to collect more - hopefully the ones marked for older readers will be suitable as this carries on the story x

I thought this book was good but you need more description of the place you"'re in. Other than that the story was quite good. You could also think of adding some pictures or drawings of characters or surroundings.

Did not get a chance to read this book due to having to send it straight back to the supplier. This was because the quality was very poor and the pages had been stuck upside down in the cover!!!

I think because I have seen the TV series the story did not have the same affect when reading it. However, you could imaging in your own mind how the scene should be and sometimes came out better than the TV series.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Weakest Installment of Series 2, but a good read nonetheless, 7 Dec 2012
This review is from: Merlin: The Nightmare Begins (Hardcover)
"The Nightmare Begins" is the first episode of the Morganna arc that dominated Series 3-5 and whilst we're still in the early, pre-battle days of Series 2 this was where the series took a major link forward and replaced the ashes of the previous femme fatale Nimueh with the more complex and tragic Morgana. The epsiode starts with Morgana's magic going in all directions and her nearly being burned alive in a chilling opening. Magic is named the culprit but over time Morgana's fear grows. Merlin, being the understanding one who knows of such things, tells her to go the druids. However Uther believes her to be kidnapped and sends armed forces to deal with the druids. What ensues is a massacre, the return of Mordred for his second appearance and from this one can guess at the problem here.

It's weak because it really just goes to a slaughter. But with this in mind it's not terrible. The fear Morgana fears is genuine, the change here is not straight to evil (Episode 11 and 12 are where it feels too sudden) and the first half isn't bad as it builds up, the pay off is just insubtantial and just kills a lot of druids with Morgana put aside for about 6 episodes before magically emerging again. However the book does manage to do well at expanding without the constraints and it means we get more time, more working and it's a well written book.

So overall verdict, an improvement on a weaker episode of Merlin and a key element in the overall story, well translated into novel form with the usual trademarks of the TV series + extra parts which add more depth to the proceedings.
