5.0 out of 5 stars Great story-telling
It's a testament to the strength of Patricia Scanlan's writing that her readers, whether male or female, can empathise with her characters. In this tale of a betrayed wife, we meet a real woman: no Jackie Collins-esque maneater, but a real human being, complete with frailties, faults and vulnerablility. Scanlan manages to avoid the obvious trap of creating a cartoonish...

1.0 out of 5 stars Have'nt i read this plot line before?
Dull and predictable this book is another story of a wife being replaced by younger new improved version of herself. This book is uncannily like the plot of Cathy Kelly's bestseller "Woman to Woman" only five years too late! I realy don't think woman should be subjected to the depressing ramblings of yet another marital breakup and an unrealistic cateripillar...

This review is from: Francesca's Party (Paperback)
this is a great book it's got everything you want, humour, love, tragedy and an alltogether good book to read. But the book also has serious undertones which are very transparent. the idea we are becoming a very fickle race.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book., 28 July 2011
This review is from: Francesca's Party (Paperback)
I am really getting into books by Irish female writers now and Patricia Scanlan is one of the best. I really enjoyed this book and felt close to the heroine, Fransesca while reading about her life journey. Fransesca is faced with the shock of her life when she realises that her mild-mannered husband of 22 years is having an affair with a woman almost half her age. Naturally she is upset, bitter and angry but she is so strong and I love the way she is a fighter and is such a good mum to her boys in spite of everything that is flung at her. Patricia Scanlan has a real knack of good storytelling. I will be reading much more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing, 11 Nov 2003

Kirsty (South Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Francesca's Party (Paperback)
Having read some of Patrica Scanlan's earlier efforts such as 'Foreign Affairs' and 'Mirror Mirror' i was slightly dissapointed with 'Francesca's Party'. Even though it was a well written novel it didnt possess the 'X' factor whihc her other novels do. The plot focuses on Francesca who after dropping her husband off at the airport discovers he has left his mobile phone she goes rushing after him in the airport only to find him kissing a another lady, who he has being having a rather long affair with. After disccovering this Francescas life is twisted upside down and she discovers that Mark (husband) is not the man she thought he was. Even though i enjoyed the novel it seemed quite repetative as there is not that many charcters in it and only really fcuses on Francesca, Mark and Nikki (his lover) and his affair. As there is no sub plot there is not much else going off. A good effort but not the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching, 26 July 2002
This review is from: Francesca's Party (Paperback)
I have been a fan of Patricia Scanlan for sometime now, but upon reading this book she is now top of my list. The characters are well created, colourful and real and the story is very well put together. Yes, it is a little bit predictable, but the fun is in getting to the predictable ending. This is a very emotional story and I found myself sucked into it from the first page. I almost felt like it was happening to me. The clever thing is that she manages to turn a sad and emotional storyline into an easily readable, entertaining book. Excellent holiday or train travel material.
