This book takes place 20 years after Final Impact. You get to catch up with all the characters from that book plus their children. They have all settled in different places and formed new communities but they are now faced with a new threat in the form of a plague called red shadows which kills nearly everyone it comes in contact with.
I loved this book! It is a brilliant sequel, although it can also be read as a stand alone novel. (I would recommend you read Final Impact first though, simply because it's also a fantastic book). There are some sad moments along the way, as well as scary ones but it feels like catching up with old friends that you have lost touch with! I just wish it could have been longer! Great!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating--a frightening and intriguing premise, 2 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
I was so impressed by this book. It's my first by this author and I quickly surmised that it is a sequel, but that was on special order, so I went ahead and read this one anyway. It stands alone as a pretty powerful work of fiction that stayed with me after I'd finished. (a 2-sitting read because I was caught up in the characters. I am not a frequent reader of sf and/or apocalyptic fiction, but this is a wonderful novel anyone would enjoy. I was pleased to see the character names were as ordinary as the circumstances were extraordinary! These people seemed familiar, flawed, and ultimately heroic.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINAL IMPACT -- THE NEXT GENERATION, 3 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a classic big-canvas novel, as the children of the FINAL IMPACT characters come into their own. Don't worry: most of the original gang is back as well -- but they take a back seat to the young men and women born during and after the cataclysmic Impact Days. As usual, Navarro's main focus in on her characters, and those in this novel are firmly within the Navarro tradition of strong, intensely believable people, who carry with them that Stephen King-like sense of being someone you actually know . . . or wish you that did, or fear that you might . . . Overall, another superior effort from a consistently fine author. As one of the other perceptive folks quoted on this page recommends, buy both books and read them back-to-back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, scary, 29 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Pretty tremendous sequel to Final Impact pulls off being scary and full of brooding sense of doom. Really feels like the world has ended! I hope there will be a third book! The story line carries over better than most overblown epic fantasies out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars an enthralling, rapturous ride through the near future, 25 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
It's rare that a sequel (no matter what the author calls it) is good as the first. This is one of those rare gems. It's a generation after FINAL IMPACT, and the survivors and descendants continue their struggle to be just what they are... survivors. A must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars RED SHADOWS is nail-bitingly suspenseful!, 24 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Yvonne Navarro's latest book, RED SHADOWS, is her best novel yet, adding to an already excellent body of work. Her characters' lives become part of the reader's, with the reader suffering with every loss and rejoicing with every hope as if their own. Along with the vivid characterization, there is more than enough action to issue this warning: Don't start reading this book just before bedtime if you plan on getting any sleep! Somehow, Ms. Navarro found a scientifically plausible way to stop the rotation of the Earth. (According to Dr. Ellen Stofan at NASA, as seen on TLC, one theory explaining Venus' retrograde rotation was a huge asteroid impact!) While exploring the ramifications of one face of the Earth always facing the Sun, Ms. Navarro weaves in some mysterious mutations and a nail-bitingly suspenseful plot, making RED SHADOWS a truly good read and a great follow-up to FINAL IMPACT!

5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic journey back to the world of Final Impact, 18 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
A new threat hit all the zones (Dark, Gray, and Light, all that's left of the world) in the form of a one-hundred percent fatal disease, and it's spreading! It's been about twenty years since Final Impact, in which the earth was struck by shards (some as big as cities) of a rogue planet. We meet up with many of the characters from the first novel, finding out where Eddie took his son, what became of Naomi and her tribe of vampiric followers, Simon and Mercy and their similarly gifted children, and what's become of Lily. Having read the first book, it was quite exciting to come back to this world and find out what's happened, two decades later, to my favorite characters. It's one of those books where, while in between readings, I often found myself going over their situations in my mind, making predictions, hopes, fears... as if I actually lived in their world. And, for a short amount of time, I once again did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of 98?, 17 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Yvonne Navarro's FINAL IMPACT was one of the most powerful and effective novels of 1997. Now we have the follow-up (or sequel, whatever you want to call it), and it lives up to everything we were hoping for. Damn, this is good stuff. Buy it and the first novel and read them back-to-back.
