4.0 out of 5 stars A neglected gem
While not up to the standard of his later work, Desolation Road, I can confidently say that if you liked "Desolation Road" you will like this. 2.0 out of 5 stars Love it or hate it
This is the kind of book you either love or hate (or leave midway, that is). Ian McDonald has lots of ideas, and seems to want to put them all in the book, which is filled with images, brilliant phrases, and comic-book characters. However, it does not add up to a coherent world, or to a poignant plot you want to follow to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars A neglected gem, 26 Jan 2011

It is very much written in the imaginative style of Desolation Road, packed with eyeball kicks and verbal riffs. It's set in a dystopic society, dedicated to mediocrity and the abolition of pain, and follows a band of misfits and outcasts from this society as they travel through, underneath and even above the city of Great Yu. The resolution is somewhat (literally) deus ex machina which spoiled my enjoyment a little, but for a first/early novel, this blasts the ball right out of the park.

4.0 out of 5 stars Richer than you might expect, 24 Mar 2014

This review is from: Out on Blue Six (Kindle Edition)
This book is built around the well-worn structure of plucky group of nonconformists battling totalitarian 'utopia', in this case run by unseen authorities suspected to be computers of some sort. So far so ho hum. The utopia in this case is less obviously wicked than most, the risks of overturning it more apparent, and 'our side' more disparate, disunited and divided by contradictory aims than usual. Also, Ian McDonald even in 1979 was writing well and this book is just crammed full of incident, ideas and humanity. All the McDonald books I have read have shared the advocacy of the fecund, the accidental, the organic and that's all here. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not at this price..., 20 Jan 2014
This review is from: Out on Blue Six (Kindle Edition)
Such a shame.

I loved Desolation Road and Ares Express and would probably like this... not at this price though. 7.41 to read this on kindle is shocking and I'm starting to feel abused with the prices that we are expected to pay. This isn't even a new book, it was written in 1989 and is available for 5.99 new in paperback.

Such a shame.
