5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic of American literature and social thinking
If you have any interest in anti-consumerism, anti-commercialism, or just simplistic living / downscaling you MUST read this book (and visit the pond in Concorde if you get the chance...)

Thoreau provides an exquisite window onto a world that more and more people in society today are hungering for. He articulates the principles behind a simpler way of life,...

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this....
A useful book to be familiar with, but I have two main problems with 'Walden':

1) Writing style.

In Walden, Thoreau makes some fine philosophical observations. As others have said, they are however buried chest deep in turgid egocentric waffle and domestic pedantry ( even for the time period ) the extent of which I have only seen replicated in...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic of American literature and social thinking, 26 Nov 2009
This review is from: Walden and Other Writings by Henry David Thoreau (Paperback)
If you have any interest in anti-consumerism, anti-commercialism, or just simplistic living / downscaling you MUST read this book (and visit the pond in Concorde if you get the chance...)

Thoreau provides an exquisite window onto a world that more and more people in society today are hungering for. He articulates the principles behind a simpler way of life, and then goes that step further than most authors on the subject, and lives the life that he preaches (until US Taxation Laws force him to abandon the idyll that he creates...)

Don't buy it - in true Thoreau style, go and get a copy from your local library!

Must be read! Must learn about Thoreau in the schools! H.D Thoreau was maybe the first ecologist of the world.

Thought-provoking in many ways. Lose yourself and be inspired to change your life. Carry it with you and find some quiet times to escape into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars so appropriate, 20 Aug 2013

I loved it when I studied English and US literature at University and I still love it. My copy was so scribbled that I needed a new one but in fact I bought it for my husband who loves woods, woodlands and logs and who would enjoy a bit of civil disobedience as he is continually ranting against civil servants and the likes !

I don't know how to let Amazon know that the section entitled Product Description and, underneath that, About the Author - is about another author, not the author of this book. I haven't read this book but I am sure it is very good.

Thoreau provides a different perspective on the world that we readily accept around us and makes us question our place within it. Great read and a fantastic compilation of his works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read, 12 Aug 2012
This review is from: Walden and Other Writings by Henry David Thoreau (Paperback)
Firstly, Walden is simply a masterpiece in writing. Every page seems to have a line that is quotable and memorable. Thoreau wrote with humour and wit, and highlighted a lot of the absurdity in the way we live today by doing so. One of the Top 10 favourite books ever. He also makes me want to give up my city life and go and live near a pond in the woods. One can dream can't she!

Thank you for your legacy Henry.

Glad I purchased the "easy" read version. Can imagine that a much smaller print would be a bit heavy going

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this...., 30 April 2014

A useful book to be familiar with, but I have two main problems with 'Walden':

1) Writing style.

In Walden, Thoreau makes some fine philosophical observations. As others have said, they are however buried chest deep in turgid egocentric waffle and domestic pedantry ( even for the time period ) the extent of which I have only seen replicated in Jaroslav Hasek's satirical comedy 'The Good Soldier Švejk'. Should you accept the task of reading this, be warned that it may take you a long time, and no matter how much you tell yourself it will change your life, you probably won't enjoy the journey.

2) Concept.

If you were attracted to this book through an interest in some kind of spiritual asceticism then you may find this book useful, but maybe you have enough Buddhist books already.

If you like the idea of being in the woods then you'll have far more fun reading the excellent children's book 'Brendon Chase'.

Entrepreneurs, people in roles of leadership, or those with a head start over most of the people in the world will find the sentiments expressed in Walden useful.

It isn't a book for everyone. Specifically, if you are a nineteenth century rich boy and fancy a bit of a frolic with poverty as your only means of exoticism in a world cruelly sullied by wealth and achievement, then this is your book.
