A superbly interesting book from Lady Fortescue covering life in France at the beginning of WWII. I found it absolutely fascinating as well as thought provoking, as I had read nothing of life in France at the beginning of the War. It includes heart rending snippets such as the story about a Frenchman marching off to war clutching his tiny baby, as his wife had just died and there was no one with whom he could leave the baby. The story then moves on to Lady Fortescue's dash back to the UK (leaving France at the same time that the troops were being pulled off at Dunkirk) and part of her subsequent life back in the UK.

Had never realised before the situation during the war in Provence... for the people who lived there and the soldiers in the Alps. Written very movingly.

The story is one of an intrepid Lady attempting first to relieve the boredom of French conscripts at the outbreak of the first world war, and then the tale of her fleeing France to England. Very well worth reading.
