4.0 out of 5 stars Deft touch from Anne Fine
For those who think Anne Fine writes for children only, think again! As usual she hooked me from the first sentence in this story of a disfunctional family, headed up by a domineering mother who chooses to destroy the pieces of the much loved family garden every time she is upset or thwarted. Usually i love Anne Fine books, and really enjoy reading what she has to offer. But i have to say that ultimately i was dissapointed in this book, and would say that it is definetly not one of her better efforts. The plot was confusing at times and the ending didnt seem to do the book and favours. Never the less its a nice book to have in the collection.

For those who think Anne Fine writes for children only, think again! As usual she hooked me from the first sentence in this story of a disfunctional family, headed up by a domineering mother who chooses to destroy the pieces of the much loved family garden every time she is upset or thwarted. The reactions of her grown up children and their partners to both this and the news that their docile and unattractive sister is marrying a stunning spaniard forms the basis of the book. I love the characters Anne Fine creates, their barely hidden bitterness and selfishness provides more bite than you usually get in a family saga and makes them highly realistic. Very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievabl, 2 Mar 2014
This review is from: In Cold Domain (Paperback)
How does Anne Fine get into the heads of so many different sorts of people? She is an astonishing novelist. Here we have frustrated Mrs Collet, - not the most natural mother - for ever still being nagged or bothered by her four grown up children. She can't help taking her irritation out on their idyllic childhood garden, slashing and burning till it looks, as her son William says, as barren as the Russian steppes. Fine's depiction of Mrs Collett's gay son William, compared to his older lover Caspar, is brilliantly done. (I was reminded of the great gulf in attitudes between pre- and post-feminist revolution women. ) As usual with Fine's work, it's amazingly funny. I burst out laughing so many times on the commute that people were craning to see what I was reading.
