So Lucy follows her husband to Australia with their two children, only to be dumped shortly afterwards. Then starts drowning in her own self pity, and under the weight of Kathy Lettes jokes.

It made me think of a scene in Friends where Chandler and Monica were trying to figure out why some new friends hadn't called. Monica had been saying to Chandler 'but you were so funny, joke after joke after joke' and later she started saying 'joke, joke, joke, joke, joke!' rolling her eyes in exasperation. Thats what I felt like with this book. Too many jokes (or attempts, when you put that many in it becomes unfunny)that took away from the plot.

Also the subline on the cover 'He made love and now its war' isn't really indicative of the book, as the central character spends nearly all of the book playing the victim, so I felt slightly misled. There was also a poorly written sex scene at the end that wasn't needed.

Not terrible, just ok but don't let it put you off Kathy Lette's earlier work because they are worth a read.

Come on Kathy, you can do better.

I saw Kathy Lette interviewed on TV a few weeks ago and can remember thinking what an exhausting (and irritating) dinner guest she'd be with the constant, and I mean constant, attempts at joke cracking. She was like a poor man's Joan Rivers...
Anyhoo, I've read all her previous work and have usually enjoyed her witty, full on approach to life when on paper so was looking forward to her latest offering.
And it started out ok. I liked the plot and the central character, Lucy, is whole and likeable - she's drowning in her own self-pity (and alcohol) after her husband walks out - and needs the help of a few new friends to put some meaning back in to her tattered life.
Unfortunately, the one-liners were thick and fast. So thick and fast that sometimes the story was indecipherable. Her attempts at humour were over the top and she often had characters saying ridicuous things in order to 'set up' the next joke. Also, every character in the book (possibly with the exception of Jasper, the ex) is funny. Which just isn't. I realise that humour is integral to the theme but I just wished she hadn't found it necessary to inject quite so much. It spoilt it for me and I ended up speed reading the end to find out the outcome. A shame.
Worth a read but I would recommend her earlier work much more...

Kathy Lette's heroine is a middle aged housewife with two children who slowly picks herself up with the help of new friends and a hobby after being dumped by her husband for her former friend. Kathy writes in her usual style of sharp wit and laugh out loud one liners. The twists at the end just add to a very funny read.

i love kathy lette she is one of the funniest authors around andthe best thing about it is you can relate to so much of her words.I always find when im down an feeling a bit fed up if i read one of her books it puts me in a much better mood.Well done kathy for cheering me up this particular book was hilarious and it goes to show that so many so called best friends will stab you in the back to get their claws into your husband lucy is a typical mother who just expects life to carry on on and wait for her philandering hubby to crawl back to her with his tail between his legs.

I loved the use of language and humor! The twist at the end was unforseeable right until the page before and I even gasped a few times, much to the disgust of my husband!! Fab read, Highly recommended! (:

This book had me laughing out loud and put me through a rollercoaster of emotions. It is a page turner and I found it very hard to put it down. This book was recommended to me and I'm so glad I decided to read it.

Cathy Lette's humour is quick and witty. This was a great light read with a few creative twists along the way. It was enjoyable.

And I did! Being australian I really identified with the characters, even though the author had stereo typed them a lot. The only problem with the story was that at times it was just too much humour, I found myself wanting a bit of a break.
