Brilliant book. Deep and moving. Gives real insight into the dynamic between invaders and indigenous people. Read and learn. It is worth it.

From the get go you know you are in good hands. Susan Cooper is a writer I haven't read in a while, her subjects are always interesting and her writing tight and poetic. This is a simple enough story, but with hints of 'magic' that half way through turn the story on its head. It's a master stroke of story telling and Cooper pulls it off brilliantly. The narrative wanters slightly at the start of the third part, but the tension builds to a satisfying climax. A modern classic I'd say.

A tale of the pilgrim fathers and the native Indians told through the eyes of a ghost. Gentle prose full of evocative descriptions of nature and old customs. It is offers a curious blend of heartwarming goodness and grim bigotry.
I do t really want to add any detail except to say that I loved almost every page and was moved to tears more than once. A delight.

Takes you straight to the heart of the characters and leads you through their thoughts. Loved it! The mix of mystery and history is beguiling.

Don't read the Anonymously submitted review in block capitals at the bottom of the page: spoiler alert. Hopefully it will be removed soon.

Great book, I couldn't put it down. Susan Cooper's skills at connecting her readers with the landscapes and individuals she describes must surely be hard to beat.

I love her 'Dark Is Rising Sequence' too and re-read it every year. This is the best new book of any genre I've read in ages, with an important message. Highly recommended for readers young and old (like me!)
