What do you get when Steven Spielberg, Jeffry Katzenberg, and David Geffen all want to play together?
Why, you get "DreamWorksSKG", the studio the three Hollywood titans put together in 1994. Nicole LaPorte's well-written account of the men and their company - first private, then taken public in the early 2000's - and its impact on movies, music, and other entertainment media. But LaPorte writes about more than just the "Big Three"; she looks at Hollywood history and the development of..."development". That word - development - means a lot in reference to the entertainment industry. It encompasses "talent", "agents", and "producers" among others. LaPorte shows how deals are put together and how movies get made. She's detailed, but never boring.
If you're interested in the hows and whos of entertainment, LaPorte does a very good job at showing the inside out of the industry. Every page of her long book is interesting and makes for great reading.

loved this book! This is a well written book documenting the creation and running of the Dreamworks studio. it is filled with interesting characters from the world of entertainment and that is not even including speilberg, katzenberg and Geffen. So interesting to see why some movies work and some don't and the egos that cause problems. i came away wondering how any movie studio makes a profit. If you are interested in how Hollywood works and why - this is a great book to read.

I was originally looking for a book about Dreamworks animation and then came across this one. What a great read. Lots of fun to read about the behind the scenes of so many well known movies (Gladiator, American beauty, Shrek to name a few) and not just the dreamworks animated ones. If you have any interest in the production and business side of movies then this is a must buy. It's a shame none of the 'three kings' would provide an interview for this book but all of them are so successful why would they? There's also some great insights into what goes into marketing a movie for the Oscars. Be prepared for lots of big money deals, bulging egos and laugh out loud quotes. Thanks Nicole!
