This Book Will Save You Money,
By
This review is from: Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars (Paperback)
I hope this review will help someone intending to spend hard cash on Binoculars'.When I first started out in Astronomy, I spent over £300 on things that should have been left in the shop. If I had owned a copy of this book, it would have enabled me to buy just what I needed, with cash left over. It gives you the all the information you need to set yourself up with the right kind of Binoculars', for the job, and shows you that buying a good pair is not as easy as you think. I really hope this review helps someone, as there is nothing more annoying than throwing cash down the drain. Spending a fiver, or even less on this book, will keep the cash in your pocket, where it belongs.

A very good book and well priced. Clear explanations and fun to use with a good pair of binoculars and a clear night sky. Some basic prior astronomy knowledge would be useful before hand but the book explains all you need if you are interested in this topic and just starting out.

Buy this before getting a cheap telescope,

This review is from: Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars (Paperback)
This handy-sized book shows you that you don't necessarily need to purchase a small telescope to appreciate what the night sky has to offer. Each month is covered by a broad view of what's on offer, then a more in-depth look at the highlights follows. Insets give background information on general objects. Then we move closer to home with a look at The Solar System, then the all important choice of binoculars, finally a guide to their use. Many Astronomy books are good at showing colourful, dazzling images of space, but this book doesn't set the beginner up for a fall, by realistically showing the type of view you would expect. Wish I hadn't started out with that 40mm telescope (many years ago!)

For the beginner like me, this had been a helpful book. Most of it deals with choosing binoculars, so I would get the book before buying the binoculars -- although we are very pleased with our choice of the Olympus Binocular 10x50 DPS-1 -- and a tripod adapter, which does make quite a difference! Of course -- for the almost absolute beginner like me -- there is much to see before you even get to use the binoculars on a star field, and much more will pass until you are able to gaze at some objects with understanding. So, you can get the book first, do lots of observations then get to choose your binoculars later. It covers the sky monthly for both hemispheres, planets, moon and sun observation. Together with the freeware program Stellarium you can easily plan your observation sessions without the need to purchase a star chart or moon chart immediately. We already have had a few very entertaining sessions, and I can already know approximately what time it is during the night by looking out the window. Not in a city. of course...
