5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive reference for helicopter aerdoynamics., 2 April 2003
By A Customer
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Helicopters are, admittedly, horrible things. From a structural point of view, a system rotating and vibrating at its resonant frequency is cause enough for headaches. But aerodynamically, things get even more involved.
The most complex scenarios occur in forward flight. On one side, the blade tip reaches near sonic speeds, while on the other, the inner sections of the blade actually travel backwards relative to the airflow. The result is highly unsteady, highly non-linear aerodynamics. In short, nothing that a student of aerodynamics would want to encounter early in his career.
This text book is perhaps the best introduction to the subject area of helicopter aerodynamics that is currently available. It starts off on a relatively basic level (fundamental aerodynamic knowledge is assumed throughout), but goes into quite considerable depth even on the more complex subjects. Considerable depth, for what is essentially a broad text book. The main achievement is that, while it does not avoid complex issues, the book still manages to be very accessible, and it does cover helicopter aerodynamics on several different levels of complexity, ranging from first approximations (momentum disc theory) to blade element theory and even details on dynamic stall.
In short, if for any reason you find yourself involved in the aerodynamics of a helicopter rotor, this book is the perfect place to start.

This review is from: Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics with CD Extra (Cambridge Aerospace Series) (Hardcover)
Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics is an amazing text book on helicopter aerodynamics. It has really helped me understand many of the topics I do in my module. Not only as a university text book reference but this book can use as reference for Engineers in Rotary wing industry for consulting.5 star for this book
