This review is from: The International Atlas of Lunar Exploration (Hardcover)
This is a good book, and a must for the serious space history reader. It is crammed full of information about not just the success stories of Lunar exploration, but also the failures, near-misses and 'wish-list' missions that never made it beyond hand-waving. The illustrations include many never seen before, such as Phil Stooke's carefully cleaned up Surveyor panoramas, and a series of comparison shots showing high altitude flyby images and map projections side by side. Unique too are the maps showing the paths taken during human EVAs and the Lunakhods.

In short, a really good book.

There are various flaws which I hope are corrected in the second edition. Firstly, and my only serious complaint about the book, the illustrations are wildly out of sync with the text. A picture might be thirty pages away from the accompanying text, and although there is a scrupulous numbering system throughout the whole business of flipping back and forth is tiresome. Hopefully a second edition will sort this out. Secondly, no colour. None at all. Colour is no longer an expensive luxury (especially at the price of this book!) and could have been employed to great effect in the maps. Thirdly, timing. The book was published before LRO and the spate of Asian spacecraft returned to the Moon, and so misses out on some terrific material - again, let's hope there's a second edition.

Well done, Phil!
