Hadley's study of James affords many of the pleasures of reading her fiction. Her prose is self-consciously ''fine', sometimes even Jamesian in its wroughtness of syntax, and for me that was a real virtue; each chapter is elegantly composed and her readings capture some of the spirit of James. There is little that is groundbreaking here in terms of James criticism, admittedly, but Hadley's judgments are always sane and often very acute; her reading of 'The Awkward Age' is especially good, but she also manages to make 'A Portrait of Lady' seem fresh, and I find myself returning to this book often.
