Excellent book. If you never dealt with econometrics before - this is the best starting point. Author develops intuition - not just states and proves formulas. Highly recommend. This is the only book in econometrics which got me interested in the subject.

This was my coursebook of financial econometrics at Financial Engineering master program in Bogazici University. Chris's Book is one of the best in financial econometrics. Detailed but clear explanations to the hard concepts. The web site of this book is also very beneficial.

All the positive reviews here must have never seen a good textbook in their life - otherwise they would not have given 5 stars to this one. A textbook ought to be read easily, page to page. But this one is loaded with subtle language errors which make it difficult for the text to flow, and more importantly it provides no original material - there is no insight that this book gives that you cannot find anywhere else. It is not structured well and it provides limited explanations on why things are the way they are. In the matricies section, it doesn't state even once what matricies are. And it's expensive.
Sadly, there is just no better book out there.

It's a good introduction into the topic and a fairly easy read.
Brooks manages to convey the topic without resorting to formulas all the time.
That also means that it is sometimes a bit slow and does not go very deep considering the size of the book.
Some people critizise the use of EViews. I think learning statistics/econometrics and something like R or SAS should be two separate topics. Any book that I've seen that tried to teach both fell short on both ends.
EViews is a simple program that gets to the point quickly and should be seen as a means to show the results of the examples, not something that should be learned as well.

Good for beginners in the econometrics as well as for more advanced researchers. The material is coherent and well presented.

If you have a strong mathematical background you would be much better off reading "Statistics and Data Analysis for Financial Engineering" by Ruppert and Matteson. This book is written for those people who have little to no understanding of mathematics or statistics and as a result is very wordy. It also uses EViews which is not widely used in industry, unlike Ruppert's and Mattensons's book which uses R and which is widely used.
