4.0 out of 5 stars The best there is, it seems., 16 April 2009
This review is from: Professional English in Use Medicine (Paperback)
Actually the publisher's description is pretty fair. The book is just right for medical students whose first language is not English but have already reached let's say a good B1 level (at least) in general English. Its chapters provide a complete framework of subjects which are relevant to most corners of the medical profession and is essential study material even for medical specialists (who probably know the vocab of their own field anyway). On the negative side it lacks reading passages which are interesting and up-to-date, and the exercises are a bit limited maybe. But if an ESP teacher has to chose 1 book then this is it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good EFL text book for Doctors/Medical Staff, 9 Dec 2010

This review is from: Professional English in Use Medicine (Paperback)
This was book was bought for use in class with Doctors wishing to improve their overall medical English and with an aim to allow them to feel more confident in presenting papers at international conferences.

The book is quite extensive covering 60 chapters relating to medicine. Each chapter identifies the type of sentences and vocabulary used by the medical profession. This book is used in conjunction with other classroom activites like presenting case histories and discussing medical conditions. The level of English is about B1.

In some aspects I would have perhaps preferred the book to have had a higher level of English, as in some cases the exercises are a little simple. But if this book is used in relation to other classroom activites as mentioned before I think it is well worth buying.

I am an interpreter and I bought this book to practice medical terminology. I like the layout - explanation on even pages and practice on odd pages. It has got a key, which is very useful for self-study. It has also got an index with pronunciation.

I think it is a good tool to improve the vocabulary, and expressions.
I recommend it to previous preparation to work.
I don't like to write this information, I this it should be optional.
