This was recommended by my University as pre-course reading, and it certainly provided a detailed introduction to the field of Roman Law, assuming little or no prior knowledge of the subject.
The book has a thoroughly readable tone, and, if you engage with it fully, is very rewarding.
It isn't always a book you can read on the train or if easily distracted - if you're reading it as your first introduction to Roman Law, you'll have to pay attention!
That said, its detailed account of the evolution of Roman Law through history, from the initial interactions between Roman citizens, through codification and commentary, up to recent history, is thorough yet succinct, and ideal as a first foray into the field.
