Not the best but not the worst.
on 6 September 2015
I had to purchase this book for S1 during my AS year.
The book seems to have a mixed reception with most people. I admittedly hardly used the book unless I absolutely had to (i.e. the teacher taught out of it or I was set homework from it.) If you were to read through it, it does a very good job of explaining the theory to you. It also has plenty of practice questions to work through.
However, it is incredibly dull. The pages are entirely made up of black and about 50 shades of grey (and not the fun kind.) There is very few diagrams to help illustrate points, which is a shame as there is ample opportunity for them in a module like statistics. If there is a diagram, it is usually poor.
The information is also quite disorganised as the book prefers to teach you a concept through a block of writing rather than easy to understand segments. The result is important information is dispersed throughout paragraphs and walls of text with no clear indication as to where you will find the core principle/formula.
I used the book combined with MyMaths and a few other statistics books for revision. It is useful in this context, primarily due to it's large volume of practice questions. For most students, you will be obliged to obtain this book. Therefore, rather than advising someone not to buy it, I will instead encourage a statistics student to seek further resources. Combine these with past papers and you should be good to go.
