5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful analysis of an important aspect of Roman society, 6 Mar 2001
By (Brussels, Belgium and Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
With extreme clarity the book examines the difficult subject of loan making in the Roman world. The author uniquely breaks down the financial activities of the various socio-economic groups and examines their attitudes toward profit maximization and patrimony or social advancement. It is a rare piece of scholarship where in addition to specialized documents and references to current scholarly studies on the Roman economic system, the author uses with first rate analytical power well known sources such as Cicero and Suetonius. It is a must book for understanding Roman society in general.
