This review is from: W. A. Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (Cambridge Opera Handbooks) (Paperback)
Tim Carter's guide to Le Nozze di Figaro is an excelent starting point for anyone interested in opera. It covers not only the plot and music but the operas reception in Mozart's time and an excellent chapter by Michael Robinson is dedicated to Mozarts influence on the Opera Buffa plot and tradition. The transformation of the original play to an opera libretti is equally well covered and shows how much the librettist Da Ponte contributed to the opera. Included is a Synopsis of the opera that is indepth enough for anyone who has never seen the opera staged to understrand the intriguing and complex story. This is combined with excellent cross referencing between the chapters to make a conprehensive analysis of the Opera not only musically but in terms of the 'classical period' and the political and social aspects of Moazrts Vienna.
Engaingly and clearly written I would recomend this book to any opera lover and as an excellent start for the more indepth study of Mozart Operas.
