This review is from: Mystical Bedlam: Madness, Anxiety and Healing in Seventeenth-Century England (Cambridge Studies in the History of Medicine) (Paperback)
If I were a scientist of any description and I had to choose to write one piece of research in my life, this would be the one work I would choose. I am continuously awed by the simultaneous scope and detail Macdonald shows in "Mystical Bedlam". I love this book. I believe it is essential reading for anyone truly interested in the origins of the understanding of Psychology and Psychiatry as medical science rather than as a religious affliction; for anyone interested in the turning point of medicine to empirical science rather than superstition; and for anyone who is interested in reading beautiful research.
