I would recommend reading this text. I was a bit sketchy about the period 1640 to the early 1700's (Walpole's Period), but I found this a good introduction to that period and more. I also notice that other authors have attempted an analysis of the period of the 1832 Reform Act, but I would recommend their texts add little to the scope of discussion.

I accept that if one wants similar information but with a social bent, one could look at E P Thompson, The Making of The English Working Class, for a great example, but I would still advise that one reads this text first.
