5.0 out of 5 stars Shortlisted for the British Academy Book Prize 2003, 12 Dec 2003
This is an exciting and provocative investigation of the issues in ‘historical’ authenticity of performance in music. Professor Butt relates such performance to arguments about ‘heritage’, new audiences and actualities of performance. He is not afraid of investigating the intentions of the composer while recognising how hard it may to re-capture them. His own authority as a performer informs the discussion.

This is a 'must-read' book for anyone researching historically performance practice. Butt sums up the history of the debates surrounding this area before moving on to present his own interesting and thought provoking views.
