This review is from: The Cambridge Companion to Mozart (Cambridge Companions to Music) (Paperback)
As you would expect from a Cambridge Companion, this is a scholarly but very readable guide to Mozart's music. It serves a purpose for the die hard enthusiast as well as the more casual listener. The book contains numerous essays on the composition, performance and reception of his towering masterpieces. It also discusses differing attitudes towards Mozart and his music, including the changes to interpretations in performance of his works. If you are looking for a biographical account then I would recommend Maynard Solomon's superb book (simply titled "Mozart, A Life"). But if you are looking for a guide to his compositions that is easy to refer to, and will enhance your understanding and ultimately your enjoyment of his music, then this book is ideal. Always analytical and objective, it avoids hyperbole and idolatry; something which I am incapable of doing when reflecting on the achievements of arguably the greatest composer of all. Buy this, read it, then sit down and rediscover all those familiar pieces with an even greater appreciation of their timeless elegance, profound insight and infinite variety.
