This review is from: Immortals: The Redeeming (Immortals (Love Spell)) (Mass Market Paperback)
The previous books in this series have focused on one each of five immortal brothers who battle evil forces in a world in which demons, vampires and werewolves are recognised by the general population. The brother Tain has featured in several of these books as the brother who was captured by an evil demon and tortured for 700 years before finally being rescued.

Tain is on the brink of madness, struggling to recover from the traumas he faced, and in this latest book we follow his experiences as he connects again with the half-demon Samantha. Sam is a cop who had a part to play in the destruction of Tain's captor and who attracts Tain but he fears his madness and finds it hard to be around her.

Sam is investigating some demon murders when she comes across Tain again. He's incredibly powerful and yet gentle with her. As Sam finds herself drawn into demon politics and relying on some unexpected allies she and Tain must work together to prevent more evil.

This book is very akin to others in the series with the same strengths and weaknesses. Despite much navel gazing about Tain's past I never really felt I had a convincing insight into his character, and Sam's was sketchy too. The strong point of the story was the way that Sam learned about the demon world and her place in it with unfolding politics and possible new allies. The book was interesting but hardly broke new ground and felt perhaps a little unengaging.

This review is from: Immortals: The Redeeming (Immortals (Love Spell)) (Mass Market Paperback)
15 months after the events which occur in book 4 "The Gathering", half demon Samantha still thinks about the immortal warrior Tain and wishes she could see him again, she just doesn't expect it to occur whilst she is undercover investigating the distribution of an illegal demon drug. Tain in turn wants to believe his attraction to Sam and his inability to stay away from her is solely down to her demon allure until realising they have a far deeper connection. Yet after centuries of torture at the hands of an ancient demon Tain still teeters on the brink of madness, his only shining light in his life a woman with a heritage he (rightfully) despises.

As young female demons are captured, tortured and sacrificed, Sam and Tain work together to find the mastermind behind these killings; determined to stop a potential all out war between demon clans and humans. Assisted by other immortal warriors, vampires and shape shifters, Sam and Tain battle a variety of enemies whilst falling in love and confronting their own personal demons.

I was a little unsure how interesting this book would be, considering the climatic end of book 4 in which the 5 Goddess mothers, their immortal sons and their sons' mates unite to battle ancient demon Keshmut and free Tain from his enslavement; however JA produced an absolute cracker of a book with plenty of action, magic, supernatural creatures and a deeply passionate and emotional tie between the leading lovers. It looks as if this series is set to continue despite all 5 immortal brothers now happily matched to their perfect partners; however at least another 3 books are scheduled for release, in which other strong, supernatural warriors meet their matches. I very much look forward to the release of "The Crossing" (due for pub. Sept 08), "The Haunting" (Oct 08) and "The Reckoning" (release date unknown).
