5.0 out of 5 stars Postcard Century, 21 Sept. 2010
This review is from: The Postcard Century: 2000 Cards and Their Messages (Paperback)
As a veteran postcard collector, I hugely recommend this book. Every card is faithfully reproduced; the author gives us the messge on each (and the cards shown bear some very interesting ones!). Divided up year by year, this is both a pictorial history of the last century and also a collector's bible. There are not many subject areas that are not covered. I've been reading it non-stop since I bought my copy a week ago.....

This review is from: The Postcard Century: 2000 Cards and Their Messages (Paperback)
This is a most enjoyable book. It's a large-format softback, nicely produced by Thames and Hudson, which 'tells the story' of the postcard, using very large numbers of postcards from the author's collection as illustration. Social, cultural and political history are inevitably involved, and major events - the Great War, the Second World War, the liberallsing movements of the 1960s, the fall of the Berlin Wall and many others - feature. Tom Phillips includes the message on each postcard and a brief comment (often witty) below the postcard illustration, providing a shadowy but interesting, sometimes poignant, glimpse of the unknown people who wrote these messages. The development of postcard art is showcased - indeed, in so many ways this generously produced book delivers.
Warmly recommended

A very enjoyable book content-wise, but very uncomfortable for an old, not very well man. No anticipation of its bulk and weight - probably my own lack of research.
