At first sight 'The City of London' edited by Nicholas Kenyon is an attractive, glossy coffee table book. But do not be deceived by the cover; it is more: a magnificently researched and fascinatingly written history of London's historic City Centre. Kenyon's book is a joy to both read and browse. It takes the reader on a series of interlocking journeys bringing buildings to life in a cohesive way. Highly recommended as a reference book, as a comprehensive armchair tour guide to the City of London's architecture and a superb gift.

I was educated at the City of London School, at its previous home along the Victoria Embankment, and I used wander the streets of the City after school in the hope of being inspired to greater things. I needn't have bothered: I could've waited for this book; it does it all for me. Beautifully presented, a welcome addition to any collection of books about London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable multi-purpose book, 19 Mar 2013

This could be an excellent picture book of London in its own right, with over 500 photos, paintings and illustrations combining well-chosen historical images and excellent contemporary photos.

But at the same time we have a book that compiles very informative descriptions of 174 buildings and structures in the City covering a very full range of type of structure. This is a book that includes churches, the Temple, banks, livery halls, stations, bridges, public buildings and housing, but also takes care to include Fox's umbrella shop in London Wall.

Furthermore as the entries are grouped by area with a map at the start of each chapter the book is an inspiration to walk the areas and either see the buildings themselves either for the first time, or to look at them in a new light informed by the book.

Note that Thames and Hudson also publish "The City of London: A Companion Guide" which they describe as a "redesigned edition" of this book which at around 23x15cm is clearly designed as a more portable vesion to take out. However, that editon has 443 illustrations against this book's 533 and - whilst I have not seen it - must presumably have reduced the size of many of the remaining pictures. For my purposes, I prefer this more comprehensively illustrated large format version.

I bought this book as a present for my elderly father who spends a lot of time in the City. He loved it! It is full of information and beautifully illustrated.
