4.0 out of 5 stars Review, 11 Oct 2011

Read this book in a public library and liked it and brought it as a reference showing past to present art, however there are some art styles which are left out like Graffiti Writers Art, Mental lll Art, Folk Art, Tattoo Art and Concept Art and I dont mean the Conceptual Art period which is mostly Non Art or Anti Art which I call Crapism from the 1960s to present day e.g: Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola, Cindy Shermin. The School of Saatchi: Damien Hurst, Tracy Emin etc and forgetting the two big ones Performance and video Art.

I liked the graphed map of art styles, movements and groups at the beginning pages of the book, from year 1860 to 2000, some of which you will not of heard of eg : Les Vingt, Decadent Movement, Cloisonnism, Nabis, Sysnthetism, Salon de la Rose + Coix , Jugendstil, Vienna Secession, Ashcan School, Jack of Diamonds, Synchromism, Pittura Metafisica, Hungarian Activism, Arbeitsrat fur Kunst, Der Ring, Neue Sachlichkeit, Elementarism, Gruppo 7, M.I.A.R, Organic Abstraction, Lettism, Situationist International, GRAV, Support- Surfaces. etc. The book is easy to read with good example of art works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind Every Great Artist:, 10 Jun 2010

A Scottish education website recommended this book; I have used it as my first research stop since my degree access course. It continued to aid my research through my BA degree and is currently performing a similar role at MA level. Amy Dempsey is an important writing and studying role-model as she writes 'incredibly clearly' and intellectually without baffling the reader with rhetoric. She approaches and articulates the subject thoroughly, though I have to admit that I eventually move on to other books that cover the topic equally as well.
