K. Platt "blackplantlady" (Sheffield, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anselm Kiefer Studios (Hardcover)
This is a rare opportunity to see inside the studio of one of the giants of contemporary art. It's like taking a peek inside Kiefer's brain. An insider's view. Kiefer actually lives in his studio, at one with his work. This book explores the painter's space wherever he has set up studio, around the world. Remote Barjac, Buchen, Croissy with photos of other studio spaces. Location is important to fuel Kiefer's work. The text supports the incredible photography of Kiefer's work. It does not interfere or take over the book, letting the images of the work speak for themselves. I like the work produced in Barjac best. Kiefer states that his work is a continuum. The book is a mix of superb black and white and colour photographs. All dynamic. I would have liked to see every caption with details of the medium used, as this is part of the fascination of Kiefer's work - his ability to blend and mix mediums to achieve effect and depth. Scale and space are obviously important to Kiefer's work, Cohn explains the importance of the studio to Kiefer's work. This book has been translated from the original French. This is a wonderful insight to this artist and his work, an inspired journey to the artist's intimate space. I would recommend it to anyone who loves art.
