5.0 out of 5 stars A set of essays that urges us to re-read these 16 classics of art history, 14 May 2013

This review is from: The Books that Shaped Art History: From Gombrich and Greenberg to Alpers and Krauss (Hardcover)
In just sixteen essays, to cover the core texts that underpin contemporary art history, is a tall ask. These short introductions, all under the auspices of the Burlington Magazine, each take one key text from across the last century or so, and its author, in a dozen or so pages tries to persuade you of its significance. And in most cases they succeed admirably. You may argue, as the editors certainly did, about which texts were included and which were not, but the serious ambition of the project is inescapable. Myself, I would certainly have included John Berger (Permanent Red, The Moment of Cubism, Success and Failure of Picasso) but this collection has stimulated me to go back and re-read the books by Pevsner, Gombrich, Clarks (both Kenneth and T.J.) and to read anew those by Krauss and Belting. This beautifully printed and presented compendium, with its wonderful photographs of the art historians, copious notes and helpful bibliographical essays will, I am sure, play a major role in reinvigorating and enthusing the current debates about art history.

If you need a single book which will introduce you to sixteen of the most influential individual books which shaped Art History during the 20th Century, this is the one for you. Each book is looked at in terms of its ideas, theories, arguments, and the development of the author; together with notes on how it was received initially and its legacy. This volume is a concise and very good introduction to further study..

5.0 out of 5 stars A good primer of important texts, 11 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book acts as a primer of the important texts that are vital for any art history student. The commentaries locate the texts into a wider historical debate at the time of their publication. Essential reading for art history students and for those who want to refresh their memory of quite why these texts have held such importance within over the debate of what art is and how it is read and interpreted.

5.0 out of 5 stars See them all anew., 20 Jun 2013
This review is from: The Books that Shaped Art History: From Gombrich and Greenberg to Alpers and Krauss (Hardcover)
Agree with St Ouen - a surprisingly engaging read, at least in the two I was most interested in N Pevsner and K Clark. I'm a regular user of Pevsner's guides and will now be in the happy position of using them, with what chapter 5 has taught me, as if for the first time.
